Suno, the artificial intelligence music platform, has announced a suite of new safety features designed to track and restrict the distribution of its generated tracks. The startup will implement audio watermarking and fingerprinting technology to identify songs created on its platform and prevent users from uploading them to streaming services to game royalty systems. Additionally, Suno has partnered with lyrics provider Musixmatch to integrate its Sentinel system for copyright detection, alongside updating its community guidelines to ban unauthorized voice clones and deceptive audio.

These measures arrive as the company navigates severe legal and security hurdles. Suno, which secured $400 million in a Series D funding round in June, is currently defending itself against copyright infringement lawsuits filed by Sony Music Group and Universal Music Group, coordinated by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The startup also recently lost a case in Germany, where a court ruled in favor of the licensing agency GEMA. Compounding these issues, a November 2025 data breach affecting 55 million users revealed that Suno scraped platforms like YouTube, Deezer, and Genius for training data, triggering a class-action lawsuit in Massachusetts.

For music creators and developers utilizing generative AI, these updates signal a tightening of the ecosystem. Suno plans to roll out a restrictive download policy to prevent mass distribution on commercial streaming platforms. According to co-founder and CEO Mikey Shulman, the new tracking tools are built to be "durable and resistant to tampering" while preserving audio quality. Practitioners must now navigate stricter boundaries regarding voice likenesses and copyright compliance, meaning that commercializing AI-generated music will require greater transparency and adherence to platform-specific rules.
