At a recent Google Cloud event, the company announced it is transitioning Gemini into the agentic era with a unified agent capable of executing tasks on behalf of users. Google is prioritizing corporate clients for this rollout to address complex security, scale, and performance challenges before expanding to consumers. The scale of this launch is significant, as Gemini currently boasts over 1 billion monthly active users, and nearly 90 percent of Fortune 100 companies already utilize Gemini Enterprise.

According to Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian, the new agent can be given "objectives, not just instructions," allowing it to plan workflows, apply custom skills, and connect directly to internal corporate systems. By default, the system automatically selects the optimal model for a given task, though users can manually select alternative models, including Anthropic's Claude, with open-source and private models coming later. The agent integrates with major enterprise platforms such as Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Slack, Jira, Confluence, Git, BigQuery, Databricks, Postgres, and Snowflake, and supports Model Context Protocol servers.

For practitioners, the agent functions essentially as a virtual colleague. It receives its own Workspace account, complete with a dedicated email address, and maintains context regarding team structures, time zones, calendars, and approval hierarchies. Users can interact with the agent by tagging it, emailing it, or adding it to group chats across iOS, Android, Windows, Mac, command line interfaces, and ServiceNow. A dedicated tasks inbox lets users monitor the agent's reasoning, subagent delegation, and code execution, while an automated audit trail ensures accountability.

Early testers of the technology include Shopify, PayPal, and sportswear brand On. Google also highlighted existing Gemini Enterprise customers like BNP Paribas, Merck, and Ulta Beauty. To help organizations manage the costs of running these autonomous workflows, Google is introducing flexible spending controls, including smart routing, multi-model orchestration, and real-time spend caps.
