Interpol says AI drives 55% of African cybercrime
A new Interpol report reveals that artificial intelligence has become the primary driver of cybercrime in Africa, accounting for 55 percent of offenses and doubling financial losses.

Artificial intelligence has transitioned from a supplementary tool to the primary engine behind cybercrime across Africa, according to a recent assessment by Interpol. The international policing organization reports that AI is now implicated in 55 percent of all reported cybercrimes on the continent. This technological shift has triggered a massive surge in financial damage, with losses more than doubling from $192 million in 2024 to $484 million. The data, compiled from 36 African nations, marks 2025 as the pivotal year when AI became what Interpol designates as the core operational driver of regional digital crime.
The report highlights that bad actors are leveraging AI throughout the entire lifecycle of their attacks. Criminals utilize these advanced systems to automate reconnaissance, craft highly convincing phishing campaigns, execute extortion schemes, and generate synthetic identities capable of tricking biometric security protocols. Notably, authorities documented approximately 600,000 instances of digital extortion that specifically utilized deepfake technology. Neal Jetton, the director of Interpol's cybercrime division, noted that the technology now automates everything "from reconnaissance and phishing to extortion and evasion."
Despite the rising threat, law enforcement has secured notable victories. Four coordinated Interpol operations spanning 2025 and 2026 resulted in more than 1,500 arrests and the recovery of over $100 million in illicit assets. For cybersecurity practitioners and AI developers, these developments signal an urgent need to redesign defensive architectures. Traditional biometric verification and basic phishing filters are no longer sufficient against automated, AI-driven evasion tactics. Security professionals must pivot toward deploying defensive AI models that can detect synthetic media and predict automated attack patterns in real time to counter this industrialized threat landscape.
